Personal & honest: Living with marble, our bathroom one year on

When we decided to renovate our bathroom earlier this year, the choice of material for the vanity top was never really in question. We had seen marble in magazines and showrooms for years, and we always came back to the same conclusion — nothing else comes close.

But like most people, we had our doubts. Would it be too delicate for a bathroom? Would toothpaste and soap leave marks? Would we regret it within six months?

Here is what we found out, living with marble in our bathroom every single day.

The first few weeks

We were almost afraid to use it at first. Every drop of water was wiped up immediately. Every product was moved off the surface before bed. Looking back, it was a little excessive — but when you have just invested in something beautiful, you want to protect it.

The first real test came when a bottle of toner was knocked over and sat on the surface for a few minutes before we noticed. We held our breath. We wiped it up. Nothing. Not a mark.

Settling in

After the first month, we relaxed. The marble was sealed properly from the start, and that made all the difference. Soap, water, the occasional splash of perfume — everything wiped away cleanly. We do a proper wipe down once a week with a soft cloth and a gentle cleaner, and that is genuinely all it takes.

There is one small etch mark near the tap where we occasionally use a foaming face wash. It is barely visible, and honestly, it does not bother us at all. It feels like part of the story.

One year on

The vanity top looks, in our opinion, even better than the day it was installed. The marble has settled into the room. It feels like it has always been there. Guests always comment on it — it sets the tone for the entire bathroom.

If you are on the fence about marble in a bathroom, our advice is simple: go for it. Choose a good quality stone, have it sealed professionally, and treat it with a little common sense. It will give you back far more than you put in.
